Gardening

I promised myself I would never garden. I remember weeding with my mother for what seemed like hours. About 2 weeks ago, Mik posted a neat post about square foot gardening, followed by his recent update. Mik's garden looks great. It also looked manageable. My mother's garden was always so large that it was overwhelming. I checked out square foot gardening online and found the website. I started a few little seeds and planted the rest in a small area that was already laid out by the previous family. The zucchini quickly sprouted in the regular dirt. The basil was the first to sprout in the starter box with the oregano quick to follow.

Then, as a graduation present, my mom bought me the book All New Square Foot Gardening. I quickly realized that my garden is not a square foot garden (SFG). Oh well. I still got to plant things and hopefully, the little plants will still make. It is also helpful that the garden is next to the back door. It is very easy to step out the back and check on them.

I planted Basil, Chives, Coriander (same plant that makes Cilantro), Oregano, and Zucchini (a type of squash). These are all plants that we will actually use.

The Zucchini has taken off like crazy and I have already snipped a few of the plants off to make room for the stronger ones. I am not sure what I will do when the zucchini really takes off but I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

I really want to plant a true SFG but I am afraid it will have to wait. I plan on moving sometime next year and I am not sure I want to get a garden started then either abandon it or have to transport it. Transportation is an option with SFG because you build your gardens in boxes. All you have to do is build it with a base and off you go. However, it will still take up room in the moving truck.

Thanks again to Mik for a new hobby. I'm sure my mother is proud of us both!

Ha! I'm amazed, well done! I smell a new subgroup...gamers who garden! I can't wait to see the fruits, err, veggies of your labor.
